Flipping houses can be fatal! When Katelyn finds a dead body in her first home renovation project, she seriously doubts her decision to “follow her bliss.” After getting fired from her steady job, her plan to flip houses takes a hit when she becomes a suspect. After all, possession is nine points of the law, isn’t it? Especially, when it’s a dead body.

To keep herself in pizza, peanut butter, good coffee, and her stray cat, Boots, in kitty chow she takes survival jobs as a wine sample hostess and market researcher. Meanwhile, Sheriff Don is kind of hunky, and her ex-husband, Eddy (it’s complicated) is back in her life sleeping on her sofa. How’s a girl supposed to solve dead body mysteries, make a living, and find love?

MY REVIEW – FOUR 1/2 Stars

There is no hanging body in Katelyn Baxter’s home renovation project (as shown on the cover), but there definitely is one tucked up in the attic.  She and her friend Myra accidentally discover it during a last-minute tour of the house before offering it to the public for sale.  The unexpected dead guest and the very suspicious policemen who come to investigate, put the kibosh on her open house for the near future. All her hopes of earning some much needed funds vanish.

Fired from her former job, Katelyn is desperate for cash. She applies for and gets a market research job in a nearby mall. (There are some pretty funny moments when she asks senior gentlemen very embarrassing  personal questions.)  Other baby product questions for young mothers are far more successful. Katelyn knows however, that this is only a temporary job at best. She must solve the mystery of the body in the attic so she can sell her house.

Who could have put the body there, and why? As she struggles to find rhyme or reason in this baffling mystery, another body is found in a derelict house nearby that firemen used to practice their skills on.  Reluctantly, the hunky Sheriff Don scratches her name off his suspect list, and she’s free to stage an open house.  But sadly, only the curious and thrill-seeking come to look. Then another person dies who Katelyn knows and once again she’s a person of interest.

Author Bakos writes a fascinating and very unique murder mystery in Fatal Flip. The twisted plot lines lead this way and that and seem unconnected at first.  You really don’t see the shocking scheme behind the murders until the end, when – if you were a killer – the blazon audacity of it would thoroughly impress you.  (I’m not, and it did!)  How in the world did the author come up with this amazing plot? She surely must be a fan of Holmes and Christie!

I gave the book Four and a half Stars because it is a bit slow starting. But when the humor and action kick in, plus the complicated love interests, the book really takes off.  If you like to renovate and restore (flip) homes, Bakos offers a few tips you might want to consider.  The main one is, of course, check the attic, basement and all the closets for corpses before putting out the Open House sign.

I voluntarily reviewed this book as a part of the Great Escape Book Tours.

  1. Fatal Flip sounds really intriguing because of all the things happening! Putting on my TBR list, M.E. (unfortunately a long list) but looking forward. Thanks, Jackie, for introduction to another unknown to me author. Great tour.
